February: Lace, Silk and Suggestion

Lace photographs best in raking light: place the source almost parallel to the surface so every thread casts a shadow. Head-on light flattens lace into a grey smudge.

Silk does the opposite — it needs soft, broad light to show its sheen. Never light both materials the same way in the same frame; choose which one is the subject.

Suggestion is a compositional skill, not a limitation. A frame that ends at the ankle, a hand at the edge of the image, a shoe abandoned out of focus — these carry more than an explicit frame ever does.

My rule is simple: the photograph should be publishable everywhere and still make one person look twice.

A tripod, a two-second timer and a chair for the reflection check are enough. Focus manually on a folded towel placed exactly where the foot will rest, then swap the towel for your foot.

Shoot forty frames and keep three. February images are about a mood you cannot repeat on demand, so volume is how you find it.
