High Heels
October: Rain, Ankle Boots and Reflections

October is the month I stop fighting the weather and start using it. Rain gives a city street a reflective floor, and a reflective floor doubles every heel, every ankle and every step.
Wet ground as a mirror
Shoot low — lens roughly fifteen centimetres above the pavement — and the reflection becomes half the frame. Dark asphalt after rain reflects better than pale stone, and a nearby shop light gives the reflection colour.
Wait for the rain to stop before shooting. Falling drops are noise; standing water is a mirror.
The ankle boot month
A short boot cuts the leg at the narrowest point of the ankle, which is exactly why it flatters. Choose one with a visible heel and a clean shaft line, and photograph it in three-quarter view rather than straight on.
Pair it with the same sheer nylon you introduced in September: the continuity between months is what makes a diary feel like a diary.
Grey days, warm frames
An overcast sky is a giant softbox, and it flatters skin — but it also drains warmth. Add a warm element in frame: a tan leather, a brass doorway, a red leaf on the pavement.
In editing, lift the shadows slightly and keep the highlights soft. October should look damp, not dull.

Questions readers ask
- How do I photograph feet in the rain without ruining shoes?
- Shoot after the rain stops, keep the session under ten minutes, and carry a cloth. Standing water gives the reflection; sustained rain only damages leather.
- Which heel height works best on wet ground?
- Six to eight centimetres. It shapes the arch clearly and stays stable on a slippery pavement.
- Why do my overcast photographs look flat?
- Missing warmth, not missing light. Put a warm-toned object in the frame and lift shadows slightly in post.
